چکیده

With the immense popularity of the internet and the much lower cost for online surveys compared to in-person interviews, many surveys are now conducted online. One approach to identify whether respondents are having difficulty answering a question is by analysing cursor trajectory data. There are many different input devices, for example computer mouses and touchpads. Respondents’ behaviour and thus their cursor trajectories might vary depending on which device is used. As a first step toward tackling this issue, this thesis tries to differentiate between trajectories produced by using a mouse and those made by a touchpad. There are two classification methods used here; one is using a simple logistic regression model to try and classify the input device, the other is a tree-based approach, more specifically, a Random Forest model. Furthermore, two models with different features are being fitted to the data: a baseline model using features based on previous research as well as a full model utilising several other, new features. Both methods and models offer a very limited capability to classify respondents’ input devices. A comparison between them shows that the full Random Forest model exhibits the best performance of the methods used. Finally, measures to improve the classification performance and the question whether a differentiation between the input devices is necessary at all, are discussed.

Picking and Snapping for 3D Input Devices

A picking mechanism (pointing and indicating) with the cursor is essential for any direct-manipulation application. The windowing systems, under which control a direct-manipulation application runs, provide facilities that together with special utility routines allow identifying which object within the region the user is pointing at. Such picking algorithms have been widely used for selecting o...

Cursor Control Device Characteristics

An analysis of cursor positioning may provide guidelines for improvements in cursor control. Four experiments addressed efficiency of cursor control devices (Mouse, Digitising Pen, Accupoint, Trackball). Participants moved a cursor leftwards, upwards or rightwards, positioning it in large or small targets situated in near or far space on the computer screen. Cursor coordinates were sampled ever...

A Method to Extend Functionality of Pointer Input Devices

We describe a general method for extending any pointer input device with an arbitrary set of commands. The proposed interface can be trained by the user to recognize certain cursor movement patterns and interpret them as special input events. Methods for extraction and recognition of such patterns are general enough to work with low-precision pointing devices, and they can be adjusted to provid...

AutoGain: Adapting Gain Functions by Optimizing Submovement Efficiency

A well-designed control-to-display (CD) gain function can improve pointing performance with an indirect pointing device such as a trackpad. However, the design of gain functions has been challenging and mostly based on trial and error. AutoGain is an unobtrusive method to obtain a gain function for an indirect pointing device in contexts where cursor trajectories can be tracked. It gradually im...

Moving objects with 2D input devices in CAD systems and Desktop Virtual Environments

Part assembly and scene layout are basic tasks in 3D design in Desktop Virtual Environment (DVE) systems as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems. 2D input devices such as a mouse or a stylus are still the most common input devices for such systems. With such devices, a notably difficult problem is to provide an efficient and predictable object motion in 3D based on their 2D motion. This ...
